Not all little girls go for the classic rainbow-unicorn look: some just embrace their darker side early on. Such was the case with the lovely 11-year-old girl who wanted a black unicorn cake for her birthday this weekend.
The cake itself is a classic chocolate cake filled with a cookies & cream italian meringue buttercream. The initial plan was to frost the cake with dark chocolate ganache dyed black, but after adding quite a lot of black gel food coloring to no avail, I decided to just cover the entire thing in black fondant and call it a day.
I made the horn out of black fondant with a bit of Tylo powder mixed in and a wooden dowel running through it and painted it with gold luster dust mixed with a bit of clear alcocol.
I did the same for the eyes and ears (which are secured in place with cake pop sticks) as well as the ‘happy birthday’ wish on the cake board.
Finally, I piped rosettes using the remaining buttercream, allowed them to set in the fridge for 30′, then went back with a bit more gold paint to add accents and make them pop.
Thank you 🙂
